ANDERSON, S.C. - Paced by sophomore Clement Samson's two-goal
outburst midway through the first half, the Anderson men's soccer
team earned its second straight win by shutting out Catawba, 4-0,
in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Trojan
Stadium.
With the win Anderson improved to 6-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the
league, while Catawba dropped to 5-3-1 and 0-2.
Both teams entered the contest looking for their first league
win and the Trojans' Lasse Sohrweide assured AU of their first win
as a member of the SAC by notching his second game-winning goal of
the season in the 13th minute of action. Teammate Aldo Lopez-Gil
found the 6-foot forward open on the left side and Sohrweide lifted
the shot over the outstretched arms of Indians' goalkeeper Luke
McCarthy.
Samson gave the Trojans a three-goal lead with his team-leading
sixth and seventh scores of the season in the span of just a few
seconds in the 26th minute. He scored an unassisted goal by working
in from the left side and squeezing his shot in just past the post,
then moments later the 5-foot-10 forward took a feed from Sohrweide
and his shot found the right side of the net.
Anderson put the game out of reach less than six minutes into
the second frame on junior Ryan Messick's third goal of the season
off an assist from Zach Denson.
The Trojan defense held the visitors to just five shots on the
afternoon, while AU recorded 17 attempts, including 13 shots on
goal. Each team also posted just one corner kick, with each coming
in the second half.
Senior Benjamin Pepion earned the win for the Trojans in his
first start of the season between the pipes, while McCarthy
suffered the loss
Anderson improved to 5-1 at in the friendly confines of Trojan
Stadium and will get back on the pitch Saturday, Oct. 9, when the
Trojans play host to SAC opponent Mars Hill, with kick-off
scheduled for 3 p.m. at Trojan Stadium.
