WINGATE, N.C. — The No. 9 Anderson men's soccer team played Wingate to a 2-2 tie on Saturday at WU Soccer Complex. Anderson held a 14-12 edge in shots and put six attempts on goal, while Wingate finished with four shots on frame.
Aryan Benitez scored on his lone shot and finished with two points.
Jonas Zethofer added an unassisted goal and put one of his two shots on goal.
Luis Munoz led AU with five shots, including two on goal.
Julian Caro Sepulveda recorded an assist and added one shot.
Benitez put the Trojans in front in the 43rd minute, finishing from a Caro Sepulveda assist to give the Black and Gold a 1-0 halftime lead. AU opened with a Munoz shot in the first minute and played through a physical first half that included several fouls on both sides and multiple cards. The Trojans created a late attacking stretch before the goal, with
Kenta Yagi forcing a save in the 34th minute and AU earning corner kicks in the 36th and 42nd minutes. WU generated three first-half shots, but the Black and Gold held the Bulldogs scoreless through 45 minutes.
AU took a 2-1 lead in the second half on Zethofer's goal in the 55th minute, but WU tied it in the 68th minute and the match finished 2-2. The Trojans opened the half with pressure, earning corner kicks in the 49th minute while
Charles Bolduc put one shot on frame and Yagi added another attempt. WU's Lucca Burger Torres scored off a David Serdynski assist in the 51st minute to make it 1-1 before Zethofer put AU back in front less than four minutes later. After Harrison Moss tied the match in the 68th minute, the Black and Gold generated a late push with five shots from the 83rd through 90th minutes, including Zethofer hitting the right woodwork and Cole Freeman saving two Munoz attempts in the final minutes.
