GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — The Anderson University (3-1, 2-0 SAC) football team defeated Tusculum (2-2, 1-1 SAC), 14-7 on Saturday at Pioneer Field. The Trojans capped a 17-play, 66-yard touchdown drive that began late in the first quarter and ended with 13:05 left in the second. AU's defense recovered two of the Pioneers' five fumbles and recorded two sacks, while the offense went 2-for-2 in the red zone with two passing touchdowns. The Black and Gold are 3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while TU is 2-2 and 1-1.
"So proud of our football team for going on the road and winning another conference game!" said head coach
Bobby Lamb. "Sometimes you got to win ugly, and we certainly did that today. A lot of credit has to go to our defense for grinding today and holding Tusculum's option offense to just a touchdown."
Wilson Edwards completed 19 of 26 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns.
Zay Williams caught five passes for 39 yards and two touchdowns and added a 7-yard punt return.
Kenneth Brown finished with seven receptions for 66 yards.
Aaron Bryant recorded 10 tackles and one sack.
AU turned TU away on fourth down at the AU 34, then controlled the rest of the first quarter with a sustained drive that reached the Pioneers' 16 before the quarter ended. Earlier, the Trojans' opening possession ended after one first-series completion from Edwards to
Kenneth Brown, with Samuel Mullis following with a 46-yard punt. TU moved into AU territory on its first drive, but the Black and Gold got a forced fumble by
Cade Eavenson that went out of bounds, a 5-yard tackle for loss by
Trevion Graham and
Chase Sturgeon's fourth-down stop to get the ball back.
Darren Lloyd carried much of the ensuing possession, including a 2-yard fourth-down conversion at the TU 45, and
Parr Folsom added another fourth-down conversion at the Pioneers' 34 before Edwards found
Cooper Brown for eight yards late. The first quarter ended scoreless, with AU at the TU 16.
The Trojans scored twice on Edwards touchdown passes to
Zay Williams and paired those drives with two defensive fumble recoveries to control the second quarter. The quarter opened with AU already at the TU 16, and Edwards converted third down with a 6-yard pass to
MyQuan McWhite before finding Williams for a 4-yard touchdown at 13:05;
Phillip Bonacci's extra point made it 7-0. The defense answered the Pioneers' next push when Eavenson forced a fumble that
Luke Rankin recovered at the AU 47, though TU later recovered an Edwards fumble on the ensuing Trojans possession. After another defensive stop and a TU punt, AU put together an eight-play, 79-yard drive in the final 1:27, highlighted by Edwards' 30-yard completion to
Kenneth Brown and a 14-yard pass to Williams that set up their 5-yard touchdown connection as time expired. Bonacci added the extra point, and the Black and Gold finished the quarter ahead 14-0.
TU controlled much of the third quarter with a 16-play, 74-yard drive, but AU repeatedly pushed the possession backward with tackles for loss by
Scotty Miley,
Daniel Williams,
Zach Rogers and Bryant, plus Bryant's 12-yard sack. The Pioneers still converted both fourth-down chances on the march and reached the end zone on Tedros Gleaton's 6-yard run before the extra point left the Trojans ahead 14-7 with 4:23 left. AU answered with
KD Whitt's 33-yard kickoff return and moved across midfield as Lloyd ran twice for seven yards and Edwards completed passes to
Zay Williams, Folsom and
Devin Larry. The drive ended on Larry's fumble at the TU 41, and after a roughing-the-passer penalty extended the Pioneers' final possession, the Black and Gold closed the quarter still in front 14-7 with TU at the AU 40.
The Trojans closed out a 14-7 win by holding TU scoreless in the fourth quarter, with
Carter Wit breaking up a fourth-down pass and
Daniel Williams pressuring the quarterback on the final Pioneers snap with 49 seconds left. Earlier, AU turned away TU at the AU 38 when
Rafael Little and Bryant combined on a fourth-down stop, then Edwards hit
Kenneth Brown for 19 yards on the first play of the ensuing drive before
Corey Shoemaker's punt ended the series in the end zone. The Trojans' next possession used 5:19, as Edwards completed passes to Brown and
Lennix Valarie while Lloyd and Folsom converted short-yardage rushing chances before Shoemaker's 57-yard punt. On the Pioneers' final possession,
Chase Brightharp sacked Tedros Gleaton on a play that resulted in a fumble TU recovered,
Bryce Allen broke up a third-down pass, and the Black and Gold took over after the fourth-down incompletion before Edwards kneeled out the clock.
