Trojans Deal No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne First Conference Loss, Split Doubleheader

HICKORY, N.C. – Anderson University Softball (28-8, 11-3) stole the nightcap (1-6, 3-1) from nationally ranked No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne (29-9, 13-1 SAC) on the road Tuesday afternoon.

"This team never gives up and never quits." said Head Coach Kelly Roberts. "To walk away with a split against a nationally ranked conference team shows how special this group is."

Senior Shelby Bandt (Ft. Valley, Ga.) opened the scoring in game one with the Trojans lone run. The Black and Gold were unable to respond to capitalize on scoring opportunities, allowing the Bears to bring in six runs for the victory.

Senior Carson Hobbs (Nicholson, Ga.) (8-3) pitched four innings for the Trojans, followed by sophomore Caroline Morgan (Silver Creek, Ga.) pitching two innings.

The nightcap begun in the top of the first with a double to center field by senior Lauren Brakovec (Farragut, Tenn.) to bring Hobbs home on the pass. In the fifth, freshman Kara Davis (Duncan, S.C.) notched a single to shortstop for freshman Bella Harbour (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) to score. Nearing the end of the contest, Harbour blasted a homer to left field for a single run. The Trojans held the nationally ranked Bears scoreless for six innings before allowing a single run in the bottom of the seventh.

Harbour led the team at bat after going 2-for-3 with two runs and a homer for a single RBI. Securing the victory in the circle was freshman pitcher Kora Kilgore (Smithville, Tenn.) (8-3) after pitching all seven innings for a 1.00 ERA on the game. The Smithville native boasted seven strikeouts while only allowing one run and no base hits.

"Kora pitched lights out and our offense and defense showed up big behind her." added Roberts. "It's a great day for Anderson Softball!"

The Black and Gold round out an away game stretch when they travel to Mars Hill for a conference doubleheader matchup on Saturday, April 11. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
