MARS HILL, N.C. – Anderson University Softball (29-9, 12-4 SAC) split its road doubleheader (4-6, 6-4) after a late-inning surge to lift the Trojans past conference opponent Mars Hill (27-13, 8-8 SAC).
Game one started strong for the Black and Gold with a single by senior
Carson Hobbs (Nicholson, Ga.) for a single RBI before junior
Kadence Barrick (Phenix City, Ala.) blasted a homer to tally three RBI on the hit. The Lions gained momentum in the bottom of the first with three runs to take the lead. The Trojans were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities as Mars Hill rallied three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the victory.
Barrick went 1-for-3 at bat in game one with three RBI off of a single homer to generate momentum for the Trojans. On the mound was senior pitcher Katie Morria (Valley, Ala.) (9-2), pitching two innings before senior
Carson Hobbs jumped in, pitching the final four.
A single put the Lions on the board early in game two just before Barrick boasted her second homer of the day, bringing in three Trojans for Anderson to gain the lead. Mars Hill responded in the bottom of the third with three more runs to even the score. After two full innings with neither team grabbing the lead, the Black and Gold rallied two runs in the bottom of the seventh with a single to third base by senior
Shelby Bandt (Ft. Valley, Ga.) for senior
Kinsley Dunn (Central, S.C.) to score followed by an error for Bandt to round the bases, recording Anderson's final run in the 6-4 victory.
Barrick also went 1-for-3 at bat for three RBI and one run off her second homer. Hobbs followed closely behind with two RBI recorded after going 2-for-4 at bat with one run. Bandt went 3-for-4 from the plate for a single RBI and two runs added to the Trojans final tally.
Pitching all seven innings to lead the Black and Gold and earning the victory from the circle was freshman
Kora Kilgore (Smithville, Tenn.) (9-3). The Smithville native posted her ninth win of the season after recording nine strikeouts while only allowing five hits with four runs for a 4.00 game ERA.
The Black and Gold return back to the Anderson Softball Complex for their final stretch of the regular season when the Trojans host Catawba in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 14 at 1 p.m. Anderson then welcomes Coker on Saturday, April 18 for a doubleheader on senior day.
