ANDERSON, S.C. — Anderson University head football coach Bobby Lamb has announced the hiring of three accomplished assistant coaches as the program continues to build its staff ahead of the upcoming season. Malcolm Mercer has been named Defensive Line Coach, Khyle Jackson will serve as Defensive Backs Coach, and Tyler Bell joins the staff as Running Backs Coach.
Malcolm Mercer – Defensive Line Coach
Mercer comes to Anderson University after serving as the defensive line coach at Shorter University, where he made an immediate impact on the program's front seven. Under his leadership, Shorter's defensive line produced two All-Conference selections and saw marked statistical improvements, including lowering opponents' yards per carry to 3.5 and finishing among conference leaders in sacks, tackles for loss, and takeaways.
Prior to Shorter, Mercer coached at the University of West Georgia, where he assisted with the offensive line, served as interim OL coach, and helped recruit top-10 signing classes while supporting the program through its inaugural FCS season. A former collegiate defensive lineman at West Georgia, Mercer brings both playing and coaching experience, along with a strong background in player development, game planning, and recruiting throughout the Southeast.
Khyle Jackson – Defensive Backs Coach
Jackson brings extensive Division I experience at the Power Five and Group of Five levels. Most recently, he coached safeties at the University of West Georgia, following previous stops at Austin Peay, East Carolina, North Alabama, and South Alabama. Throughout his career, Jackson has worked with cornerbacks, safeties, nickels, and special teams units.
Known for his ability to develop high-level defensive back play, Jackson has coached multiple All-Conference and All-American performers, including standouts at Austin Peay and North Alabama. A former collegiate player himself, Jackson combines technical teaching with proven recruiting ties across Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi JUCOs, and Kansas JUCOs, strengthening Anderson University's regional recruiting footprint.
Tyler Bell – Running Backs Coach
Bell arrives at Anderson University after a successful tenure at Charleston Southern University, where he coached the running backs and served as lead punt return coach. His units consistently ranked among the conference's best, producing multiple All-Big South selections and finishing at or near the top of the league in rushing production and punt return average.
Bell began his coaching career at North Greenville University as an offensive graduate assistant and running backs coach, where he helped develop a conference-leading rusher and multiple all-conference performers. A former standout running back at Wake Forest University, Bell led the Demon Deacons in rushing as a freshman and was part of three bowl championship teams. His coaching philosophy centers on player development, accountability, and building strong relationships on and off the field.
