DUE WEST, S.C. – Anderson University Softball (13-3) notched their 11th and 12th-straight wins of the season after defeating nonconference opponent Erskine (3-13, 1-1 CC) on the road, 6-1 and 6-2, Wednesday afternoon.
"I am really proud of the way our team competed today." said head coach
Kelly Roberts. "Katie, Carson, and Kora were phenomenal in the circle and gave us a chance all day."
The Flying Fleet opened the scoring with their lone run of the first game after a wild pitch by Anderson in the bottom of the second. The Trojans surged past Erskine at the top of the third, boasting five RBI in the inning after senior
Katie Morris (Valley, Ala.) doubled to left center and senior
Lauren Brakovec (Farragut, Tenn.) singled through the left side.
Brakovec went 2-for-4 from the batter's box, recording one hit and three RBI to lead Anderson's offense. In the circle for game one and securing her seventh victory was Morris, tallying four strikeouts and only allowing four hits with one run for a 1.00 ERA.
Game two unfolded as a slower-paced contest early on for the Trojans after senior
Carson Hobbs (Nicholson, Ga.) scored on a wild pitch by the Flying Fleet. Erskine tallied two runs at the bottom of the fourth to take a narrow one-point lead. The Black and Gold responded with an incredible performance at the top of the seventh to steal the victory, tallying an impressive five runs driven in by freshman
Kara Davis (Duncan, S.C.) off a double to right field followed by two singles from freshman
Lily Davenport (Wetumpka, Ala.) and junior
Kadence Barrick (Phenix City, Ala.). Hobbs added the final run after a fly out to center field, capping the scoring for a clean sweep.
Davenport led the Black and Gold at bat, going 1-for-1 with two RBI. Pitching for the Trojans in game two was freshman
Kora Kilgore (2-1) with 3.2 innings pitched for six strikeouts, two hits and no earned runs.
"Game two showed a lot about this group-we were down going into the seventh and found a way to come back and win." added Roberts. "This team never quits, and I love the fight they showed along with the timely hitting and clean defense behind our pitchers."
The Trojans have a short turnaround time, facing Claflin on the road in a nonconference doubleheader on March 6 before beginning conference play the following week. First pitch in Orangeburg, S.C. is slated for 1 p.m.
