Trojans Secure Doubleheader Sweep at Home Against Newberry

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson University Softball (19-5, 5-1 SAC) remains undefeated at home after securing an 11-4 and 7-4 victory at home against South Atlantic Conference opponent Newberry (10-14, 1-3 SAC) Wednesday afternoon.

"What a great performance all around!" said head coach Kelly Roberts. "We were sharp at the plate, solid on defense, and our pitchers came through when we needed them – that's a complete team win."

The Trojans boasted 10 runs in game one of the doubleheader with hits from seniors Carson Hobbs (Nicholson, Ga.), Katie Morris (Valley, Ala.) and freshman Lily Davenport (Wetumpka, Ala.). Hobbs posted a double down the left field line for the first hit of the game to bring in three runs before Morris followed with a single to shortstop for a single RBI. Davenport's single to shortstop brought another Trojan home.

Six Trojans recorded a single RBI while Hobbs led the Black and Gold with three runs, going 1-for-2 at bat with one run. Senior Lauren Brakovek (Farragut, Tenn.) and junior Kadence Barrick (Phenix City, Ala.) each went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run and one RBI. Brakovec also had an incredible performance in the field posting 10 putouts out of 11 chances along with a single assist for a 1.00 fielding percentage.

On the mound for Anderson and securing her ninth victory of the season was senior Katie Morris. The Valley native pitched all seven innings, tallying four strikeouts and only five hits with two earned runs for a 2.00 ERA.

Brakovek put the Trojans on the board in the bottom of the first with a single to right center to drive in one. After two scoreless innings, the Wolves responded with a single up the middle and a SAC bunt for their first two runs. Entering the bottom of the fourth, Hobbs blasted a homer to right center for three to cross home plate before Manness rocketed one over the fence, recording two more runs for Anderson. Newberry recorded a run in the top of the sixth before senior Jenna Davis (Anderson, S.C.) singled for the final scoring play by the Black and Gold. The Wolves capped the scoring of game two with a single to center field.

Leading Anderson from the batter's box in game two was Hobbs with three RBI after going 1-for-3 at bat with a single homer. Following close behind was Maness after going 1-for-2 with two hits and two runs for the Trojans.

In the circle, freshman Kora Kilgore (Smithville, Tenn.) notched her fourth victory pitching for AU. The Smithville native pitched 3.2 innings, tallying three strikeouts while only allowing six hits and two runs before Hobbs took over, pitching the final 3.1 innings.

The Black and Gold jump back on the road this weekend when they travel to Carson-Newman for another SAC contest on Saturday, March 21. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
