Trojans Fall Short of Series Sweep in Sunday Finale

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University (13-5, 4-5 SAC) baseball team held a late lead but gave up eight runs in the final frame to drop the series closing contest to Carson-Newman (9-8, 2-7 SAC) by a score of 11-6 on Sunday, March 1 at Anderson Memorial Stadium.

The Trojans came out hot in the first inning after Adams Faucett (Spartanburg, S.C.) led off the contest with a single up the middle, Braeden Harrison (Spartanburg, S.C.) then stepped in a blasted a two-run shot over the fence in left field to give the Black and Gold the early 2-0 lead.

That advantage would carry over into the third inning and get expanded on a bases loaded hit by pitch that brought around the third run of the contest for Anderson. The Trojans would however leave the bases loaded after having them full with zero outs as Carson-Newman worked out of the jam, holding the Trojans to the 3-0 advantage after three complete.

Another bases loaded opportunity appeared for the Trojans in the fourth, but this time they were able to capitalize twice on it, plating a pair of runs in the frame to extend their advantage to 5-0. The Eagles would mount their comeback starting in the sixth as they were able to plate three runs to bring the scoreline to 5-3. A solo shot from Brooks Mauro (Clemson, S.C.) in the bottom of the frame brought the Trojan advantage back out to 6-3.

Neither team was able to find their way around the bases again until the top of the ninth when the Eagles posted an eight run inning to take their first lead of the day and just their second of the weekend, ending up with the 11-6 win over the Trojans as they were able to retire three of the first four batters for the Trojans in the bottom of frame.

Anderson returns to action on Tuesday, March 3 as they welcome in the Lions of Emmanuel for a non-conference match-up set for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.
