ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University (7-3, 0-3 SAC) baseball team dropped both ends of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader to Newberry (6-4, 3-0 SAC) on Saturday at Anderson Memorial Stadium, falling 18-5 in game one before a 4-0 setback in the nightcap.
Game One: Newberry 18, Anderson 5
Newberry struck early in the opener, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding two more in the second to build a 6-0 advantage. Caleb Costa (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) made the start for the Trojans and worked two-thirds of an inning before Anderson turned to its bullpen to slow the Wolves' momentum.
Anderson answered in the bottom of the third. Adams Faucett (Spartanburg, S.C.) singled to center to start the rally, and Levi Medford (Canton, N.C.) followed by reaching on a hit-by-pitch. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch allowed Faucett to score, trimming the deficit to 9-1.
The Trojans added two more runs in the fourth. Zach Stover (Simpsonville, S.C.) drew a walk and Braeden Harrison (Spartanburg, S.C.) followed with a free pass. Faucett delivered a single to center to load the bases, and Medford drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run. Gray Wells (Chapin, S.C.) then lifted a sacrifice fly to right-center, plating Harrison and cutting the margin to 11-3.
After Newberry extended its lead in the fifth, Anderson pushed across two more in the sixth. Stover singled to right to ignite the inning and later scored on a double down the right-field line by Ryan Iannuzzo (Palm City, Fla.). Iannuzzo eventually crossed the plate on a bases-loaded walk by Riley Matthews (Lexington, S.C.), making the score 18-5.
Luke Parson (Greenville, S.C.) provided stability out of the bullpen, tossing three innings and allowing one hit while striking out one to close the contest.
Game Two: Newberry 4, Anderson 0
The nightcap unfolded as a pitching duel through the early innings before Newberry capitalized on defensive miscues to secure a 4-0 victory.
Cole Davis (Simpsonville, S.C.) started on the mound for Anderson and turned in 4.1 innings of work, allowing four runs—just one earned—while striking out four. Davis limited the Wolves to three hits and worked around traffic in the early frames to keep the game scoreless through two innings.
Newberry broke through in the third, using a double and a bunt single to set up a sacrifice bunt and a pair of runs, one of which came across unearned. The Wolves added two more in the fifth following a walk and a fielding error.
Luke Godwin (Greer, S.C.) and Kaleb Owens (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) followed in relief. Godwin recorded two outs in the fifth, and Owens finished the final two innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two to keep the Trojans within striking distance.
Anderson's offense was limited to one hit in the finale, a single by Myles Denton (Charlotte, N.C.) in the fifth inning. The Trojans also drew a walk from Faucett but were unable to advance a runner past second base as Newberry's starter worked a complete game.
The Trojans hit the road for the first time this week as they make the short trip to Franklin Springs, Ga. for a non-conference matchup with the Lions of Emmanuel. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
