SALISBURY, N.C. — Anderson University softball (24-20, 9-11 SAC) used a trio of home runs and a complete-game gem from
Katie Morris to take the opener, while Catawba (19-21, 9-11 SAC) answered with four long balls of its own to rally past the Trojans in Game 2, as the two teams split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader Wednesday at Whitley Field.
The Black and Gold claimed the first game, 5-2, behind home runs from junior
Lauren Brakovec, senior
Maggie Nauck and sophomore
Kadence Barrick. Brakovec finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. The Trojans broke open a scoreless game with a four-run fourth inning.
Morris (13-8) tossed a complete-game effort, scattering eight hits and allowing just one earned run while striking out seven and walking one.
In the second game, Catawba erupted for 14 hits and four home runs to erase an early deficit and take a 10-8 win. Grace Flynn, Rachel Pressley, Kirstyn Herman, and Brianna Herring all hit home runs, with Herring finishing 2-for-3 with four RBI. Maddy Altiers added a three-run triple to fuel the comeback after the Catawba Indians trailed 7-4 through four innings.
Alex Baquie (8-8) picked up the win for Catawba with a complete-game effort, allowing nine hits and five earned runs while striking out three.
Brakovec drove in four runs with a pair of hits, including her second home run of the day. Junior
Shelby Bandt added two hits and scored three times for the Trojans. Morris started Game two for the Trojans with freshman
Anna Grace Clay (1-1) being tagged with the loss in relief.
The teams combined for seven home runs and 23 total runs across the doubleheader.
Anderson remains on the road when it travels to SAC member Coker on Saturday. First-pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1pm.
