Anderson Sweeps Coker Behind Explosive Offense

HARTSVILLE, S.C.  — Anderson University softball (26-20, 11-11 SAC) used a pair of big innings in each game to sweep a doubleheader against South Atlantic Conference opponent Coker (12-28, 5-17 SAC), earning 12-7 and 13-4 victories Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, Anderson scored four runs in the fourth inning and six more in the fifth to build an 11-1 lead. Senior Maddie Carpenter led the Trojans at the plate, going 2-for-5 with four RBI, including a three-run home run in the fifth. Junior Shelby Bandt added two hits, three RBI and three runs scored, while junior Lauren Brakovec contributed a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly.

Junior Katie Morris (14-8) earned the win, allowing four runs on five hits with six strikeouts over five innings. Sophomore Paige Vickery pitched two innings in relief to close out the game.

The Cobras mounted a late rally, scoring three runs in the fifth and another three in the seventh, highlighted by a three-run homer from Mya Cribbs. Cheyenne Palmer added a two-run double, and Maddie Andrews homered and drove in two runs. Maddie Newsome (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs — five earned — over 4.1 innings.

In the second game, the Trojans pulled away late with a six-run seventh inning to secure a 13-4 win.  Anderson pounded out 14 hits and capitalized on three Coker errors. Shortstop Jenna Davis led the way, going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Vickery had three hits and three RBI, and senior Maggie Nauck finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

After taking a 6-4 lead through three innings, Anderson added one run in the sixth before erupting in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Morris (15-8) earned her second win of the day with a stellar relief performance, retiring 14 of the 15 batters she faced and striking out three.
