NEWBERRY, S.C. – No. 47 Anderson women's tennis (16-5, 5-4 SAC) held a 3-2 lead on the road, but fell 4-3 to No. 35 Newberry (11-4, 7-2 SAC) on Wednesday morning at the Oakland Tennis Center.
AU earned the doubles point with wins at the top two positions. Gigi Sompayrac and Grace Weaver raced to a 6-1 victory on court 1, before Valentina Borda and Alexandria Braithwaite added a 6-3 win of their own. It was the Trojans' eighth consecutive doubles point victory.
On the singles court, the Wolves responded. After Newberry claimed a win at No. 5, Borda breezed to a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1, putting the Trojans back ahead 2-1.
The two teams traded victories again, with the Wolves taking No. 6 and Braithwaite earning a 6-2, 7-5 win of her own at No. 4.
Newberry emerged with wins at the No. 3 and 2 positions, with the latter clinching the match in straight sets. The loss snapped AU's 4-match win streak.
UP NEXT
AU returns home for a Senior Day matchup against Emory & Henry (3-11, 2-8 SAC) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 5. The Wasps defeated UVA Wise 4-0 in their last match.
