ANDERSON, S.C. — Anderson University (28-20, 13-11 SAC) swept Emory & Henry (31-19, 12-12 SAC) winning game one, 11-0(5) and taking game two, 6-3 in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader Saturday at the AU Softball Complex.
Anderson junior Katie Morris (16-8) scattered four hits, struck out five and walked none in the opener for her 16th win of the season. She returned in the nightcap to toss three scoreless innings of relief and earn her third save. The Wasps (31-19, 12-12) were held to a combined seven runs on 13 hits across both games.
Sophomore Kadence Barrick delivered the biggest blow in Game 1 with a grand slam in a seven-run fourth inning, finishing 1-for-2 with four RBI and a walk. Senior Maddie Carpenter went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while sophomore Paige Vickery added a two-run double. The Trojans plated two runs in the first, two more in the third and broke the game open in the fourth. Anderson committed no errors and left only five runners on base. Emory & Henry's Destiny Good (9-5) took the loss, allowing nine runs on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings.
With the game one victory, head coach Tommy Hewitt earned his 600th career win and a guaranteed spot in SAC postseason play. Hewitt is in his 20th season with the Black and Gold and has average 30 wins per season.
In Game 2, Anderson used timely hitting and strong relief pitching to claim a 6-3 win. Barrick notched two hits and a game-high three RBI. Senior Danielle Merritt hit her first career home run donning the Black and Gold while senior Maggie Nauck contributed two hits and two RBI. Junior Lauren Brakovec doubled and scored a run.
Anderson broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Freshman Sarah DePaola (2-4) picked up the win, surrendering three earned runs on five hits over four innings before handing the ball to Morris.
The Trojans retired 11 of the final 13 Wasps batters to seal the sweep.
Anderson finishes up regular season play when it travels to nonconference opponent Augusta on Tuesday. First-pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 pm.
