GAFFNEY, S.C. — Anderson University softball (20-18, 5-9 SAC) blanked Limestone 3-0 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader behind junior
Lauren Brakovec's two homes and junior
Katie Morris's complete-game shutout with Limestone (12-18, 7-9 SAC) responding in Game 2, using a five-run third inning to hold off a late Anderson push for a 7-4 victory and a series split at Jimmy Martin Field.
In the opener, Brakovec broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a solo home run, then added another in the sixth to give the Trojans a three-run cushion. Anderson also capitalized on a Limestone error in the fifth, as junior
Shelby Bandt reached on a miscue, advanced to third, and scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Paige Vickery.
Morris (10-8) scattered six hits over seven innings while striking out five.
Chelsy Stonesifer (7-5) went the distance for Limestone, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Anderson's offense collected seven hits, led by Brakovec's two homers and Bandt's two singles. Senior
Maddie Carpenter, freshmen Chole Maness and
Chaney Crosby also recorded hits.
In Game 2, Limestone jumped ahead early with a five-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Emma King and a two-run single from Ragan Bristol. Emma Wrenn capped the frame with an RBI double, giving the Saints a 6-1 lead.
Anderson trimmed the deficit in the fourth when sophomore
Kadence Barrick delivered a two-run single to make it 6-3, but Limestone added an insurance run in the bottom half on an RBI single from Madilyn Gerovac.
The Trojans made one final push in the seventh, as Carpenter singled in a run to cut the deficit to 7-4, but Breanna Clayton closed the door, earning the win after 3.2 innings of relief. She allowed one unearned run while striking out four.
Clayton (4-5) picked up the victory for Limestone, while Anderson's
Caroline Morgan (3-3) took the loss after allowing two runs in two innings.
King led the Saints with three RBIs in the second game, while Bandt paced Anderson with a three-hit performance.
Anderson will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts SAC foe Lenoir-Rhyne. First-pitch is scheduled for 1pm.
