NEWBERRY, S.C. – Anderson University (20-9, 16-7 SAC) earned a 62-50 road victory over South Atlantic Conference opponent Newberry (6-21, 5-18 SAC) on Monday night at Eleazer Arena.
"Happy to get a road win tonight," said head coach Jonathon Barbaree. "Never easy to win at Newberry, they always play tough at home."
"Shots were a little all over place, but we hit some huge ones when we needed them," noted Barbaree. "Defensively, Diamond did a great job helping in the post that lead to some steals and transition points to start the second half and that was exactly what we needed. Ashlyn really stepped up with Diamond to carry the rebounding load grabbing several defensive boards."
"One more regular season game to focus on then the conference tournament," added Barbaree.
Senior guard Zamiya Passmore led Anderson with 13 points, six assists and two steals while playing 38 minutes. Senior Diamond McDowell dominated the glass, securing a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with nine points and seven steals. Zaynah Preston added 10 points, shooting 2-for-4 from three-point range. Junior Ashlyn Sheridan chipped in six points while hauling in a season high 11 rebounds, just one shy of her career high.
Anderson held Newberry to just 29.4% shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers, capitalizing with 16 points off of the Wolves miscues. The Wolves hit a three-point basket to close out the first half of play to draw within four. The Trojans used the third quarter to propel them into position to run away with the game scoring 20 points and holding Newberry to just five points in the frame.
Newberry was led by Jess Tomkins, who posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Tomkins was the lone double digit scorer for the Wolves.
Anderson will finish up its regular seaon play on the road when it travels to Tusculum on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm.
