ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The Trojans earned their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, topping Clayton State 88-66 in the final game of the Southeast Region Crossover hosted by Flagler. Anderson finishes the weekend 1-1 with today's win. Three Trojans hit double digits as the team held the lead for the entire game, going up by as many as 29 points in the fourth quarter.
"Our ball handling could have been better today, but we did what we needed to do to create second-chance opportunities to score," head coach
Jonathon Barbaree said. "Moving forward, we need to do a better job taking care of the ball and focus on completing our opportunities at the free-throw line. Despite going 1-1 this trip, we learned a lot as a team on what it takes to play tough and play together to get the job done. Proud of the fight that we showed today."Â
Anderson shot a much-improved 47.1 percent from the field, 42.1 percent from deep and 66.7 percent from the line. They scored 25 points off the bench to the Lakers' 12. The Trojans tied their season-high from last year with 57 rebounds, led by junior
Kyla Cain (Atlanta, Ga.) with 12 to tie her career-high.
Graduate student
Ciara Harris (Alexandria, Va.) had a career-high 23 points in the win, with four rebounds and two steals. She shot 8-21 from the field and 6-8 from the line.Â
Junior
Peytyn Oliver (Athens, Tenn.) was just one point shy of her career-high with 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and a team-high three steals.Â
Senior
Ashlyn Sheridan (Knoxville, Tenn.) came up with 12 points and seven rebounds.Â
Senior
Khiara Flugence (Boerne, Texas) came off the bench for nine points and eight rebounds.Â
The Trojans were dominant from tip-off, going up 29-19 by the end of the first quarter. The Lakers nearly tied the Trojans in the second quarter by a 16-15 scoreline. Harris and Flugence had nine points each in the first half while Sheridan and Flugence had five rebounds each.
Anderson came out of the locker room hot, dropping another 27 points in the third quarter and holding the Lakers to 10. Clayton State won the final quarter 22-16 but it wasn't enough to threaten the Trojans.
The Trojans stay on the road next week when they head to Belmont Abbey College for their last game before the holiday break on Wednesday, Nov. 19th for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
