Heartbreak for the Trojans as Penalty Shootout Favors Bears in SAC Semifinals

MATTHEWS, N.C.--In the first of two semifinals for the Men's South Atlantic Conference Championships, the top-seeded Trojans played fourth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in a contest that lasted 110 minutes before finishing in a shootout that ultimately favored the Bears.

Anderson totaled 19 shots across the four periods, just one more than the Bears. Of the shots, three came on frame for AU compared to seven for LR. Trojan keeper and SAC Defensive Player of the Year Franco Antoniolli (Cardoba, Argentina) added six saves to his resume.

After an even first half, Lenoir-Rhyne opened the scoring soon into the second 45, capitalizing on a free kick just outside the box. The Trojans equalized when Jonas Zethofer (Vienna, Austria) tucked it away in the 66th minute for his sixth of the season.

Juan Pablo Lepervanche (Caracas, Venezuela) led the shooting for both teams, totaling eight on the night. Five Trojans each recorded two shots.

After ninety minutes of play and two golden-goal overtime periods, the two sides remained level at 1, forcing a penalty shootout that, after eight kicks, favored LR.

Lenoir-Rhyne will advance to the SAC Championship on Sunday (Nov. 16), while the Trojans will await the NCAA DII Selection Show on Monday (Nov. 17) evening to see if their postseason run will continue.
