Trojans Drop 30-3 Decision to Wingate

ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson University (5-4, 3-4 SAC) football team found themselves on the unfavorable side of 30-3 scoreline in the middle of a three-game home-stand as they dropped a contest to the Bulldogs of Wingate University (6-2, 4-2 SAC) on Saturday, October 25 at Spero Financial Field.

The Trojans were led on the ground and through the air by senior Tyler Wesley (St. Cloud, Fla.) who threw for 65 yards and added 30 on the ground. Freshman Lennix Valarie (Florence, S.C.) was the leading receiver on the day for the Black and Gold, hauling in three catches for 24 yards. Anderson accounted for a total of 171 yards of offense in the contest.

Defensively, the Trojans were led by redshirt-sophomore Josiah Jeffrey (Greenwood, S.C.) who tallied 10 total tackles in the afternoon, including one TFL. Redshirt-sophomore Alex Ledford (Summerville, S.C.) added eight tackles to the team's tally while redshirt-senior Jerrod Woods (Leesburg, Ga.) led the defense with one sack. The Trojans were able to outdo the Bulldogs in that category, recording four for a loss of 13.

The Trojans had trouble finding their footing early on offensively, punting on their first three drives. However, the Black and Gold defense did their job, holding the Bulldogs to just a field goal on the first two drives they had. After Wingate scored the first touchdown of the game the Trojans lined up for their first field goal attempt, but Wingate was able to break through the line and block the attempt to keep the Trojans off the scoreboard.

The Bulldogs were able to add another touchdown to their tally heading into the halftime break, taking the 20-0 lead into the locker room.
The Trojans came out hot in the second half, causing a fumble on the opening kick-off of the second half, taking over possession on the Wingate 19-yard line. However, they were unable to find the end zone and had to settle for a 23-yard field goal to crack their scoring drought.

Wingate added another touchdown in the third and tacked on another field goal in their opening drive of the fourth quarter to extend their advantage to 30-3. The Trojans were driving in the late goings of the fourth quarter, pushing deep into Bulldog territory, but the drive stalled out at the 23-yard line and the Bulldogs were able to run out the clock on their 30-3 victory.

Anderson returns to action next Saturday, November 1 for their final home game of the season as they welcome in the Wolves of Newberry College for a 4:00 p.m. kick-off.
