ANDERSON, SC -- The Trojans opened their three-game homestand with a 60-57 win over Newberry College. Their fourth straight win carries Anderson to a 9-5 overall record and 5-5 record in the South Atlantic Conference.
"Thankful we got the defensive stops needed to come out on top," head coach Jimmie Williams said. "Newberry does a great job taking you out of rhythm. There's a reason they're leading the league in points allowed. We felt that tonight. We answered the bell on the defensive end and on the glass. Really proud of all our guys, but I'd be remiss without mentioning Dallas Jones. He made major winning plays down the stretch and seeled it at the line. We have made a big step in the right direction on defense and without it we wouldn't have got it done. Proud of our grit and toughness in the trenches tonight. I love this team."
Despite shooting one of their lower percentages of the season, the Trojans outlasted the Wolves who came into the second half hot, winning it 42-33. Newberry took their first lead of the game halfway through the second half after going on a 7-0 run to get to 40-38.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, with Newberry shooting 20 percent and Anderson shooting 38 percent. The second half saw improvement on both sides while the Trojans shot 41 percent and the Wolves shot 53 percent.
All but one Trojan got on the board, with
Austin Webb (South Point, Ohio) and
Dallas Jones (Gainesville, Fla.) coming up with 12 points each. Jones added six rebounds and three steals.
AJ Wright Jr. (Tampa, Fla.) dropped ten points and seven rebounds along with four assists and three steals.
