HARTSVILLE, S.C.- A seven-minute late game scoring drought halted Anderson University women's basketball team (12-9, 8-7 SAC) from defeating South Atlantic Conference opponent No. T-8
th Coker (18-1, 14-1 SAC) for second time this season dropping the Wednesday evening heartbreaker, 70-66, at the DeLoach Center.
"Unfortunately, we came up short tonight against a really good team," said head coach
Jonathon Barbaree. "We hurt ourselves by giving up too many offensive rebounds and turnovers."
"As a coach I have to do a better job of settling us in some key moments to make sure we execute on both sides of the floor down the stretch," expressed Barbaree."
"Not the road stand we wanted the last two games, so we are definitely looking forward to being back home for the next couple of games," said Barbaree.
"Despite loss, I still would like to also recognize what I believe is an amazing feat and congratulate Diamond on becoming only the second player in school history to reach both 1000 points & now 1000 rebounds," added Barbaree.
Anderson led from the opening tip until 8:29 remaining in the fourth quarter when a seven-minute scoring drought which began in the final minute of the third period, proved costly. Coker was able to hold on despite the Trojans valiant efforts to erase a nine-point deficit during the final half of the fourth quarter.
Freshman
Rose Gravel scored a game-high 16 points paired with 11 rebounds to record her sixth double-double of the season. Senior
Zamiya Passmore record her third straight double-double netting 12 points and dishing out 10 assists. She also grabbed six rebounds and was credited with two blocks and two steals. Senior
Diamond McDowell chipped in 10 points while hauling in seven rebounds. McDowell has now amassed 1, 005 career rebounds becoming only the second Trojan to eclipse both 1,000 rebounds and 1, 000 points. 2020 graduate Alexy Mollenhauer was the first player to accomplish this feat scoring a total of 1,949 points and ripping down 1,017 rebounds.
On a balanced scoring night for the Cobras, Coker placed four player's in double-digit scoring with Mya Wasswa dropping in a team-high 13 points. Shawntenna Tillman and Kamari Thompson each netted 12 points while Dasia Ferguson contributed 10 points in the winning effort.
Coker was able to capitalize on 21 Trojan miscues scoring 19 points. AU won the overall rebound battle, 45-41. However, Coker pulled down 17 offensive rebounds resulting in 19 second chance points.
Anderson returns home on Saturday to host SAC opponent Lincoln Memorial. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm.
