ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson University women's basketball (11-7, 7-5 SAC) fell short of pushing its win streak to nine after South Atlantic Conference opponent Lenoir-Rhyne (6-10, 4-8 SAC) held on in the waning seconds to claim the, 67-65, victory on Wednesday evening at the Abney Athletic Center.
"Never like to lose at home," exclaimed head coach
Jonathon Barbaree. "We have to do a better job of taking care of the basketball in the last five minutes of a basketball game."
"We got a great look to tie and I would take that shot from Ashlyn every time," said Barbaree. "She's tough and will be ready for the next opportunity."
Each time Anderson or Lenoir-Rhyne seemed like they were going to pull away from each other, they would each respond and keep the game close. The contest featured 16 lead changes and six ties. The Bears were able to grab the final lead on a three-point basket by Blaikley Crooks with 1:50 remaining in the fourth quarter. AU's
Zamiya Passmore completed a traditional three-point play to get the Trojans within two, 67-65. Anderson's final efforts fell short as time expired.
Passmore led the Trojans with a game-high and season high 23 points. The redshirt senior was also credited with eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Senior
Diamond McDowell recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and a season high 14 rebounds.
Lenoir-Rhyne placed three players in double-digit scoring with Vanessa Jurewicz scoring a team-high 16 points. Emily Harman and Crooks scored 15 and 13, respectively.
Anderson begins a three-game road swing when it travels to SAC opponent UVA Wise on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm.
