ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University (2-1, 0-1 SAC) football team scored their first safety in program history and added a field goal to their score tally on the day, but fell short of a win in their South Atlantic Conference opener as they dropped the 52-5 decision to Limestone (2-1, 1-0 SAC) at Melvin & Dollie Younts Stadium on Saturday, September 21.
The Trojans were able to outgain the Saints on the ground as they tallied 141 yards rushing in the contest while also able to post a pair of sacks in the contest to lead in that category as well, but the remainder of the stat lines fell to the favor of Limestone in the contest. Redshirt-junior
JB Seay Jr. (Polk County, Fla.) led the Trojans in the ground game as he was able to rack up 64 yards on five carries, helped by the days longest scamper of 50 yards. Redshirt-freshman
Colton Smith (Tennille, Ga.) turned in four tackles on the day, in addition to his 1.5 sacks for a loss of 10 yards.
Limestone came out quickly in their first drive of the game and put up a touchdown, but after a missed field goal attempt for the Trojans, the Black and Gold's defense was able to stand tall and force a three-and-out for the Saints. The snap on the punt sailed over the punter's head and all the way into the endzone, where it was knocked out of bounds before either team could gain possession, though the Trojans were just inches away from recovering, to give the Trojans their first safety of their young history and brought the game to 7-2.
Unfortunately for the Trojans it was all Limestone throughout the remained of the game as the Saints were able to put up points in all but two of their remaining drives to finish out the game, with Anderson adding a 30-yard field goal from freshman
Ross Burnette (Raleigh, N.C.) to give them three more points mid-way through the third quarter but were unable to close the gap any further.
The Trojans hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Wilson, N.C. to take on the Bulldogs of Barton College on Saturday, September 28 in a 2:00 p.m. showdown.
