JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Wrapping up a two-game road trip to the state of Tennessee, the Anderson University (3-6, 1-6 SAC) football team fell to the No. 24 Carson-Newman (8-1, 6-1 SAC) Eagles by a score of 28-7 on Saturday, November 2.
The Trojans struggled to get rolling offensively throughout the contest, with 75 yards coming on the ground, bolstered by a 52 yard scamper by junior Tyler Wesley (St. Cloud, Fla.) while the Black and Gold recorded 106 yards through the air, highlighted by a 36 yard touchdown pass by redshirt-freshman Rob Sanders (Simpsonville, S.C.).
Anderson was led by redshirt-freshman Josiah Jeffery (Greenwood, S.C.) with 11 tackles on the afternoon while redshirt-senior Ryan Richardson (Birmingham, Ala.) and redshirt-freshman Colton Smith (Tennille, Ga.) each recorded a sack I the contest.
Neither team was able to find their footing in the opening quarter of action as less than 100 yards of offense were posted between the two squads. A trio of missed field goals plagued both sides as well with Carson-Newman missing one and the Trojans missing a pair. It was the Eagles response after the second missed field goal by the Trojans that put points on the board as they hit for 73 pass to go up 7-0, holding that advantage at the halftime break.
The Eagles put the contest out of reach in the third quarter as they were able to put up touchdowns on each of their first two drives of the half. C-N added another touchdown late in the fourth quarter that the Trojans were able to respond to as Sanders found redshirt-junior Jalon Warthen-Carr (Macon, Ga.) in the front corner of the end zone for a 36 yard strike to put the Trojans on the board with 1:12 to play. The Eagles ran out the clock the rest of the way, securing their 28-7 win.
Anderson returns home next weekend as they play host to Mars Hill for Homecoming & Family Day on campus. Kickoff for the contest is slated for 4:00 p.m.
