ANDERSON, S.C. – Returning home for the first time in three weeks, the Anderson University (3-4, 1-4 SAC) football team fell on the unfavorable side of a 34-3 score line on Saturday, October 19 as they dropped a conference decision to Emory & Henry (6-1, 4-1 SAC) at Spero Financial Field at Melvin and Dollie Younts Stadium.
The Trojans were able to hold the Wasps to under their season averages in total yards and rushing yards. Junior Tyler Wesley (St. Cloud, Fla.) tossed for 84 yards in the contest and added 29 on the ground. Redshirt-junior JB Seay Jr. (Polk County, Fla.) led the rushing attack for the Trojans, taking three carries for 28 yards. Redshirt-junior Jalon Warthen-Carr (Macon, Ga.) hauled in four passes for 68 yards, including a long of 48 yards.
Defensively the Black and Gold were led by redshirt-freshman Darrion Perry (Beaufort, S.C.) and redshirt-freshman Kendall Chapman (Fountain Inn, S.C.), who were both able to record seven total tackles in the contest. Six different Trojans accounted for tackles-for-loss on the day with redshirt-freshman Josiah Jeffery (Greenwood, S.C.) accounting for a sack and a loss of nine yards.
Anderson started off the game evenly matched with the Wasps as they were able to hold them to just a field goal in the opening quarter of action. Emory & Henry was able to extend their lead to 10 on a reviewed play in the endzone that the Trojan faithful thought was an interception in their favor, but the call stood for a touchdown and gave the Wasps the 10-0 lead that they carried into the halftime break.
After trading fruitless drives to start the second half, the two teams traded field goals, including a 37-yard strike from freshman Ross Burnette (Raleigh, N.C.) However, Emory & Henry was able to tack on two more touchdowns in the third quarter to further extend their advantage to 27-3.
Another reviewed play in the fourth quarter stripped the Trojans of their lone touchdown of the day, as the Wasps added another one to their tally late in the contest to take the 34-3 win.
Anderson will head to Greeneville, Tenn. next Saturday, October 26 as they take on the Pioneers of Tusculum University for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off
