Bombs Away! Trojans Earn Doubleheader Sweep Over USC Beaufort

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ANDERSON, S.C. – No. 14 Anderson University softball (2-0) used seven home runs on the day to earn the doubleheader sweep over nonconference opponent USC Beaufort (0-2), winning game one, 9-3, and earning the nightcap victory, 11-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex.

Senior Kayson Boatner hit three of the seven home runs to break AU's and the South Atlantic Conference All-Time Career HR, previously held by Trojan Cailah Niles (63). Boatner hit a home run in her second at-bat of game one and then hit two more long balls in game two to claim the record.

"Wow, what a day!," exclaimed head coach Tommy Hewitt. "We said before the start of the first game that we needed to come out and set the tone and that is what we did. That tone carried through the second game."

"Kayson Boatner had a tremendous day with three home runs, breaking AU's career record, " stated Hewitt. "Madison McDonald had a grand slam, Hannah had a home run and Morgan Charter had two home run. Lane Edgington came in to pitch for her first win and Carson Hobbs pitched and won game two. Hobbs was also 4-for-7 at the plate. Jessica Neadow played really well defensively."

"Wow, what a day!", repeated Hewitt.

Junior Laken Maxwell got the nod in game one, pitching four innings before being relieved by junior Lane Edgington (1-0). Maxwell struck out six batters while giving up three hits and two runs. Edgington earned her first win wearing the Black and Gold. She pitched the final three innings, giving up just one hit and one run.

After two scoreless innings, Boatner's bomb put the Trojans ahead, 2-0. The Sand Sharks were able to tie the game and go ahead, 3-2, using two home runs and scoring a run after a wild pitch. Anderson answered back with a three-run home run off the bat of junior Hannah Whitaker. Sophomore Madison McDonald followed with a grand slam in her first career at-bat at AU to set the final score, 9-3.

Freshman Carson Hobbs and sophomore Maddie Carpenter each went 2-for-3 with a run scored to help the Trojans earn the game-one win.

Hobbs (1-0) earned the start in game two, giving up five hits and striking out five Sand Sharks.

Hobbs got plenty of run support with the Trojans busting out 12 hits, nine of them for extra base hits.

Anderson jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with USC Beaufort cutting into the lead in the second inning of play. However, the Trojans only allowed one more Sand Shark run while scoring eight more over the final four innings of play.

Boatner went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI. Senior Morgan Charter batting 3-for-4 with two home runs and a triple with Hobbs batting 2-for-4 with a double. Senior Yas Laureano and McDonald each went 1-for-2 with a double.

Anderson returns to action on Saturday when it host nonconference foe North Greenville. First-pitch is slated for 1 pm.
