Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. - No. 13 Anderson University softball (36-6, 19-3 SAC) split its road doubleheader with South Atlantic Conference opponent Queens (28-20, 15-9 SAC), dropping game one, 6-0, and winning game two, 7-4, on Tuesday afternoon at The Tuck.
"Sometimes you take the win and move on!," said head coach Tommy Hewitt. "Regroup, get ready to play the next two."
Anderson got down early in game one and could not string any hits together to bounce back from the 3-0 first inning Royal lead. Queens added two more in the third and a lone run in the sixth to set the final score, 6-0.
Royals pitching limited the Trojans to just five hits, while striking out five. QU's Jordan Dunn moved to 16-10 on the season.
Sophomore Laken Maxwell (19-4) suffered just her fourth loss of the season. Maxwell gave up seven hit, six run and walked four batters. The native of Bowdon, Ga. added ten more strikeouts to total 217 on the season.
The Trojans bounced back in game two, despite falling behind early, 2-0. Anderson was able to tie the score at 2-2 using a hit-by-pitch, a double by sophomore Hannah Whitaker followed by a two-out single by junior Hope Gullatt to score Whitaker.
Anderson broke the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs to move ahead, 7-2. Queens put together a two-run sixth to cut the lead to 7-4, but the Black and Gold were able to shut them out in the bottom half of the seventh to win, 7-4.
Senior Morgan Charter and junior Yas Laureano drilled a double apiece with Charter going 2-for-2.
Senior Harlie Duncan (16-2) gave up 8 hits, four runs, two walks while striking out six Royals.
Anderson wraps up regular season play when it travels to Carson-Newman on Thursday. First-pitch is slated for 2 pm.
