Mountain Lions Take Advantage Of Trojan Shooting Woes; 75-56

Box Score

YOUNG HARRIS, GA. – Anderson University women's basketball (1-2) suffered a poor night of shooting in its nonconference road loss at Young Harris (1-0) on Thursday evening at the YHC Recreation and Fitness Center.

"Unfortunately, that's not how we wanted to play on the road," said head coach Jonathon Barbaree. "When you are on the road, you have to bring your best defensive game and we did not. Shots tend to fall more when you're getting stops."

Despite a four minute scoring drought, Anderson's opening quarter proved to be its most productive scoring output, outscoring Young Harris, 17-16. The Trojans shot 37.5 percent from the field, including 3-of-7 from behind the arc. AU's productivity fell off drastically in the second quarter of play with the Black and Gold only netting eight points. AU shot 23.5 percent from the field, including 0-of-6 from three-point range.

With a slightly improved third quarter, the Trojans stayed withing striking distance with one quarter to play. However, Young Harris turned a 12-point third quarter lead into a 19-point win for its season opener.

The Trojans placed three players in double figure scoring with sophomore Diamond McDowell scoring a team-high 15 points and pulling down six rebounds and dishing out five assists. McDowell made her first four attempts, including two three-point baskets. Senior Jalyn Spurlin and Brittney Stafford chip in 13 and 12 points, respectively. Stafford also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and was credited with five steals and three assists.

Young Harris placed four players in double-figures with Mackenzie Johnson scoring a game-high 22 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season. JaMari Frederick poured in 20 points, while Dusty Obah and Kalen SurlesTaylor netted 11 points apiece.

The Trojans open its home slate on Saturday when they welcome nonconference opponent Mount Olive to the Abney Athletic Center. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm.
