Red-Hot Carson-Newman Defeats Trojans

Jefferson City, Tenn. – Carson-Newman connected on 18 of its first 29 field goal attempts, including eight 3-pointers in the first half, as the Eagles built a large first-half lead and went on to defeat Anderson, 95-59, in South Atlantic Conference action, Wednesday night at Holt Fieldhouse.

Anderson slipped to 2-5 overall and 2-5 in league play. Carson-Newman (7-5, 6-5 SAC), which was coming off an identical 36-point win over Limestone last Saturday, won its second straight contest and claimed its fifth win in six decisions.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Junior Jalen Hillery led the Trojans with 10 points and five rebounds, while senior guard Alex Keel and junior forward Satchel Hester each added nine points apiece. Junior guard Joseph Staton and senior forward Josh Livingston each netted eight points. Freshman guard Tyler Henderson dished out a team-high four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Livingston scored AU's first five points, with his 3-pointer at the 17:36 mark giving the Trojans a brief 5-4 advantage, but Carson-Newman capitalized on a scoring drought by the Black and Gold and countered with a 17-2 scoring outburst over the next six minutes that built the Eagles' lead to 14 points.

Hester momentarily slowed the Eagles with five straight points for AU, but Carson-Newman claimed a 40-18 lead with its eighth 3-pointer and went on to take an insurmountable, 54-23, lead into halftime.

Carson-Newman connected on six of its' first seven 3-pointers (85.7%).

• The Trojans have made more free throws than their opponents in five of their seven games - Carson-Newman was the exception both times.

UP NEXT
The Trojans return to the Electric City for a brief one-game homestand on Saturday, when UVA Wise visits the Abney Athletic Center for just the second time in school history. Tip-off against the Cavaliers is slated for 6 p.m.
