Box Score Wingate, N.C.—Despite seeing a 15-point fourth quarter lead erased, the Anderson University women's basketball team regained its composure and was able to close out a pesky Wingate team, 72-67, on Saturday afternoon at Cuddy Arena. The Trojans move to 7-4 overall and 6-3 South Atlantic Conference play, while Wingate drops to moves to 3-5 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
"I am really proud of the team's fight tonight," said head coach Jonathon Barbaree. "It is always a battle against Wingate. They are so well coached and it seems to always come down to the wire every time we meet."
"This game was a great testament to how hard each player worked this past week," exclaimed Barbaree. "We have several things to continue to work on, but a road win is always a great win!"
KEY STATS
- Anderson shot a season high 49.1 percent from the field, while Wingate shot 33.9 percent
- The Trojans shot 36.9 percent (seven-for-19) from three-point range, the Bulldogs shot 25.0 percent from beyond the arc (four-for-16)
- The Bulldogs held a 39-35 edge in rebounds.
- The Black and Gold hit 9-of-13 (69.2%) at the free throw line, while Wingate went 21-for-25 (84.0%).
KEY TROJANS
- McKenzie Gadson scored a team-high 15 points, while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Gadson also dished out three assists and was credited with one steal.
- Taylor Hair had 11 points, five rebounds, three blocked shots and one steal.
- Alexis Tate contributed 10 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out six assists, had two steals and two blocked shots.
- Samantha Michel and Britney Bailey each chipped in eight points, pulled down four rebounds and had two and one blocked shots, respectively.
- Maggie Campbell hit 2-of-3 three-point baskets.
NOTES
- Anderson leads the SAC in blocked shot per game at 7.1 and is ranked 8th in the nation.
FIRST QUARTER
- Hair's put-back opened the scoring for the game.
- Wingate went on a 8-0 run, stopped by Gadson's jumper, 8-4.
- Campbell's 3-point basket broke an 11-11 tie, 14-11, with 4:17 to go in the first period.
- Anderson outscored Wingate 22-19.
SECOND QUARTER
- Spurlin's third basket of the game at the 7:20 mark gave AU a six-point lead, followed by B. Bailey's jumper to give AU its largest lead, 30-22.
- Following a Hair 3-point basket, Wingate went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 33 apiece.
- AU's Kaitlin Bailey's jumper at the 2:37 mark stopped the Bulldogs run, giving AU a 35-33 edge.
- B. Bailey's layup pushed the lead to four, with Wingate scoring the final four points of the stanza to set the halftime score, 37-37.
THIRD QUARTER
- AU outscored Wingate 19-7 in the third quarter.
- The Trojans used a four-minute scoring drought to go on a 9-0 run, capped off by Campbell's second 3-point basket of the game to give AU its largest lead of the game, 52-42.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Gadson's 3-point basket gave Anderson its largest lead of the game, 61-46, with 7:58 to go.
- Wingate put together a mini 5-0 run to bring the game back to within 10 with 7:09 remaining.
- A Wingate 10-2 run over the next four minutes of the game got the Bulldogs within two points, 63-61, with 3:06 to play.
- The Bulldogs tied the game at 65-65 on Peyton Davis's 17th point of the game (1:45).
-Hair's free throw, followed by a jumper in the paint put the Trojans up by three with 46 seconds remaining.
