ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University women's tennis team was
defeated by Erskine Wednesday afternoon at the AU Tennis
Complex.
With the loss, the Trojans fall to 10-10 overall, while the
Flying Fleet improve to 13-5 overall.
With the win, Erskine breaks the five all tie in the coveted
Beville Cup race with 4.5 points still up for grabs.
In the doubles round, No. 1 seeded Rebecca Bruning and Ivey
Welborn defeated Sarah McDonald and Paola Gullino 8-5, to earn the
Black and Gold's first point of the day. No. 9 Bruning and Welborn
improve their doubles record to 15-5 on the year. Flying Fleet duo
Mikaela Bennett and Miranda Guthrie edged out Alexandra Ebner and
Jennifer Holcombe, 8-5, at the No. 2 spot while Erskine tandem
Mollie Polk and Haley Elliot gave the Flying Fleet the 2-1
advantage by defeating Natalia San Jose and Abigail Gregory,
8-1.
In the singles portion, Erskine held on to win just enough
matches to edge the Trojans, 5-4. Picking up wins for Anderson was
No. 2 seed Welborn, No. 4 seed Ebner and No. 6 seed Holcombe. In
singles play, Ebner and Holcombe recorded win number 11 and 10
overall, respectively.
Despite the loss, the Trojans played a solid match from top to
bottom gaining momentum heading back into conference play Saturday
at Coker. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Coker Tennis
Courts.
