ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University men's and women's
basketball teams are partnering with several hundred other schools
around the country to participate in the WBCA's 2016 Play 4Kay
initiative this Saturday when the Trojans play host to Catawba at 2
p.m. at the Abney Athletic Center.
Pink-Out the Abney Center by wearing your pink!
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) promotes
Breast Cancer Awareness with the Play 4Kay initiative which honors
the recent Coach Kay Yow, from North Carolina State, who lost her
life to breast cancer. In addition to asking everyone to wear pink,
AU Athletics will circulate literature and will be selling t-shirts
for just $5 each, with the proceeds going toward cancer research.
In addition, members of the Trojan women's basketball team will
wear pink uniforms to commemorate the occasion.
The lobby of the Abney Center will feature raffle items that
include five $25 gas cards, a Fitbit and an Apple TV. Raffle
tickets will be available for a dollar each. A silent auction will
also be set up and include a Clemson basketball autographed by Head
Coach Brad Brownell and a Dabo Swinney-autographed football. The
auction will also include an AU Play4Kay gift basket with a
basketball autographed by both the Trojan men's and women's
basketball teams.
Other student-athletes and volunteers will be doing their part
by accepting donations from fans throughout the doubleheader, while
selling pink wristbands for a dollar.
There will also be a Survivor's Walk immediately following the
conclusion of women's game at approximately 3:30 p.m.
If cancer has touched your life in any way, as someone who has
been diagnosed, or as someone who is undergoing treatment, or as
someone who has survived, or if you have a family member that you
would like to represent, you are invited to join others for the
walk to show support and honor.
Every South Atlantic Conference women's basketball program has
joined together in the fight against cancer by taking part in the
initiative. The mission of the initiative, which began in 2007 and
has raised more than $2 million, is to develop a nation of coaches
raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in
communities and beyond.
Each SAC women's basketball team has designated a game to
support the Play 4Kay initiative. Fans are encouraged to attend
these games and contribute to the fund, which furthers cancer
research.
Support for the AU Play 4Kay initiative is also being provided
by Anderson Federal Credit Union, Skins' Hot Dogs, BSN Sports,
Mac's Dry Cleaners, Monick Construction, Walmart Neighborhood
Market, Brady's Screen Printing & Embroidery, Phil Jewelers,
Scott & Deb Taylor and Wayne & Nancy Simpson.
Play 4Kay is named after legendary coach Kay Yow, who fought a
courageous and very public battle against breast cancer to build a
platform dedicated to improving and extending the lives of cancer
patients. After three recurrences of the disease, Coach Yow passed
away on January 24, 2009.
