ANDERSON, S.C. - Trailing by three with less than three minutes
remaining in the game, the Anderson men's basketball team forced
three consecutive turnovers and outscored Brevard, 12-2, in the
final moments to claim a 65-58 victory over the Tornados in South
Atlantic Conference action, Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic
Center.
With the come-from-behind win, Anderson improved to 5-8 overall
and 3-4 in the league with its second straight victory, while
Brevard fell to 2-10 overall and 1-5 in the conference with its
fourth consecutive loss.
Freshman guard Randall Shaw led the Trojans with 17 points,
while sophomore guard Tre' Fields came off the bench to add 15
points, including 10 in the first half, while also pulling down
seven rebounds. Junior center Rakish Taylor narrowly missed a
double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, with sophomore
guard Maurice Howard tallying nine rebounds, five points and a
game-high six assists. Freshman forward Marquez Fisher chipped in
seven rebounds and six points in 14 minutes of action.
Brevard's Alex Moe led all scorers with a season-high 19 points
that included five shots from beyond the arc. Miles Leathers added
12 points, four assists and 18 rebounds, while Demarcus Threatt
also scored in double figures with 13 points.
The Tornados connected on five of their first six shots en route
to scoring the first 12 points of the game, with AU freshman Jeremy
Bouton getting the Trojans on the scoreboard with a short jumper in
the paint at the 16:29 mark. The 6-foot-6 forward connected on a
3-pointer 27 seconds later to trigger a 14-4 run by the Trojans
that gave AU a 19-17 edge midway through the first half. Fields
drained back-to-back 3-pointers to fuel the rally, but the Tornados
claimed a 35-30 halftime advantage.
The second half featured six ties and five lead changes before
the Trojans overcame Brevard's 56-53 lead on a putback by Taylor
and another 3-pointer from Fields. Following a Tornado turnover,
the duo sandwiched close baskets in the paint around another
Brevard miscue to boost the Trojans' lead to 62-56 with 36 seconds
left.
After the AU defense forced the Tornados into another turnover,
Howard connected on two from the line before Alex Moe dropped in a
layup for Brevard to pull the Tornados within 64-58 with less than
10 seconds on the clock. Howard went to the line again in the final
moments and sank one-of-two to set the final score.
The Trojans open a two-game SAC road swing on Saturday, when the
Trojans visit Lenoir-Rhyne. Tip-off versus the Bears is slated for
4 p.m.
