ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Anderson University volleyball team
stayed perfect on the young season by blanking in-state rival
Converse, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-20), Saturday morning at the
Flagler Invitational, hosted by the Saints at Flagler
Gymnasium.
Anderson (2-0) captured its second straight sweep after shutting
out Dominican (N.Y.) in Friday's opening-round action, while
Converse (0-2) is searching for its first win of the season.
Sophomore outside hitter Marissa Mitter narrowly missed a
double-double with a team-high 10 kills and eight digs, while
continuing her hot hitting to open the season. The native of
Redondo Beach, Calif., has posted a .405 attack percentage through
the first two matches. Junior Allison Gaminde added nine kills and
a pair of block assists, while juniors Tinsley Hallman and Jessica
Harris tallied six kills apiece. Hallman also recorded a match-high
10 digs on the morning. Redshirt junior Priscilla Irizarry dished
out a match-best 30 assists and came up with nine digs.
Gaminde's first kill of the contest gave AU a lead it would not
relinquish at 5-4, and sparked a 14-3 outburst that gave the
Trojans control of the opening set. Mitter posted three of her four
kills in the first set during the decisive surge. The Valkyries
climbed within eight points late in the set, but would get no
closer.
The Trojans overcame a three-point deficit midway through the
second frame with a 9-3 run and took their first lead, at 16-15, on
an error by the Valkyries. AU built a late three-point advantage
and held on for the set victory with a 4-1 run to close the
set.
The Black and Gold scored the first seven points of the third
set and never trailed in the set after opening up a quick 10-2
lead. Converse battled back within four points on six occasions,
but would get no closer.
Anderson will get back on the court quickly, as the Trojan close
out the Invitational with a contest versus Florida Tech at 2
p.m.
