NEWBERRY, S.C. - Behind career-high kill totals from junior
Jessica Harris and Marissa Mitter, the Anderson University
volleyball team closed out its longest South Atlantic Conference
road swing of the season by topping Newberry, 3-1 (25-15, 25-17,
21-25, 29-27), Tuesday night at Eleazer Arena.
Anderson improved to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in the league on the
strength of its second straight road win, while Newberry (6-4, 2-3
SAC) suffered its second consecutive loss.
Harris, a middle hitter, knocked down a career-best 17 kills and
posted a .455 hitting percentage, while Mitter added a career-high
15 kills on the night. Sophomore Serena Jackson reached
double-figure kills for the fourth time this season with 12, while
tallying five blocks. After posting her third double-double in as
many matches on Saturday, redshirt junior Priscilla Irizarry handed
out a season-high 47 assists and came up with seven digs. Redshirt
junior Tinsley Hallman had her streak of five straight
double-doubles snapped, but posted 13 digs and eight kills.
Freshman Megan Embry led the Trojans with 15 digs, with classmate
Emily Conard tallying 10 digs.
The Trojans rallied from an early deficit in the first set, with a
late surge propelling them to the double-digit win. Newberry
capitalized on three early miscues by Anderson to race out to an
early 4-0 lead, but the Trojans quickly recovered by posting four
unanswered points of their own to knot the score at four apiece.
Hallman and Harris posted back-to-back kills and AU took advantage
of a Newberry error during the run. With the score later knotted at
nine apiece, the Trojans took their first lead of the match on a
kill by Mitter that sparked four consecutive points - following
another Newberry error, Allison Gaminde and Jackson came up with a
block assist, while Jackson posted a kill to give the Black and
Gold a 13-9 edge. Leading by three, AU used a 10-3 run to take
control of the set.
With Conard serving, AU reeled off five unanswered points to
start the second frame and force an early Newberry timeout.
Following the pause, the Trojans steadily built an 8-2 cushion, but
the Wolves chipped away at AU lead and forced an AU timeout after
climbing within 8-6. While Newberry climbed within one on the next
point, the Trojans refused to surrender the lead. Mitter snapped
the string of five straight points by the Wolves with back-to-back
kills and Hallman added back-to-back aces to boost AU lead back to
12-7. The Trojans maintained the margin the rest of the way, before
closing the set with its largest lead.
The third set featured 18 ties and eight lead changes, with
Anderson unable to overcome the Wolves' .361 hitting percentage and
a pair of late runs lifted Newberry to the win. Neither squad
managed more than the final four-point margin, as the Wolves
snapped an 18-18 deadlock with three straight points. Jackson and
Harris answered with kills and following a Newberry miscue, the set
was tied for the 18th time, at 21 apiece. However, the Wolves
posted four unanswered points to claim the set.
The Trojans got off to a strong start in the fourth set, scoring
the first four points and taking a 5-1 advantage on a kill from
Hallman. AU built an 11-7 lead and held the advantage until late in
the frame, when Newberry posted a 4-1 surge to knot the score for
the first time, at 21-21. The Wolves continued their run with two
straight points to claim a 23-21 cushion and held set point at
24-22, but Mitter recorded a kill and Gaminde, along with Jackson
evened the score at 24. The Trojans trailed twice, before claiming
the set on a Jackson kill and a block from Harris and
Irizarry.
Anderson will look to maintain at least a share of second place
in the league standings on Friday, when the Trojans play host to
Brevard. First-serve at the Abney Athletic Center is slated for 7
p.m.
