ANDERSON, S.C. - With redshirt junior Tinsley Hallman posting
back-to-back double-doubles, the Anderson University volleyball
team split a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at the Abney
Athletic Center, blanking Catawba, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-23), while
falling to Flagler, 3-2 (15-25, 25-23, 18-25, 26-24, 9-15).
Anderson moved to 4-3 overall and stayed undefeated in South
Atlantic Conference action at 2-0, while Catawba slipped to 3-5
overall and 1-1 in the league with losses to AU and Flagler.
Flagler improved to 6-1 with victories over both Anderson and
Catawba.
Hallman led the Trojans with 24 kills on the day, including 14
in the setback to the Saints. She added 26 digs on the defensive
side, with freshman Jayln Knight posting a double-double in the
sweep of Catawba. The Redlands, Calif., native, tallied 10 kills
and 16 digs in the opener, as part of her 18 total kills on the
day.
Junior Jessica Harris tallied 18 kills and led the team with six
blocks, while sophomore Serena Jackson garnered 16 kills in limited
action. Redshirt junior Priscilla Irizarry posted her second
double-double in as many days, while recording 77 total assists and
15 digs on the day. Freshman Emily Conard totaled 42 digs and five
service aces, with fellow newcomer Megan Embry garnering 23
digs.
The Trojans never trailed in the opening set of the win over
Catawba, scoring the first point of the match and building a 17-11
lead before claiming the six-point set victory.
Anderson jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the second frame
before the Lady Indians countered with a 5-1 outburst of their own
to knot the score at six apiece. The Trojans then rebuilt a
five-point advantage before Catawba responded yet again to even the
score at 21-21. But the Trojans refused to yield the advantage and
capitalized on three kills from Jackson in the final moments to
take the set.
The Trojans quickly gained another 5-1 lead to begin the third
frame, but the Lady Indians again rallied to gain a brief one-point
advantage on two occasions. Jackson's kill snapped a 21-21 deadlock
and gave AU a lead it would not relinquish, as the Trojans held off
Catawba for the two-point win.
Flagler posted a .538 hitting percentage in the first set
against the Trojans and steadily pushed out to a 17-8 lead. AU
battled back within six at 20-14, but was unable to get any
closer.
After the Saints scored the first three points of the second
set, the Trojan defense stiffened to cut Flagler's attack
percentage in half, while rallying to claim an 8-4 edge on the
strength of Conard's strong serving. AU pushed out to a 15-8 lead
and held off a late rally by the Saints to even the match at one
set apiece.
The Saints bounced back in the third set to overcome an early
four-point advantage by the Trojans and staked an 18-12 lead before
AU posted a 4-1 run to get back in the set. However, Flagler closed
the frame by scoring six of the final nine points.
Neither team managed more than a three-point lead in the fourth
set, with the Trojans rallying from an 11-8 deficit to take a lead
they would not relinquish, at 14-13, on a service ace from Knight.
AU took a three-point lead of its own, at 23-20 on a kill from
Knight and claimed the win on back-to-back errors by the
Saints.
After falling behind early, the Trojans came back to tie the
score on four occasions in the fifth set, but Flagler snapped an
8-8 deadlock with three consecutive points and went on to take the
six-point win and the match.
Following a five-day layoff, the Trojans open a three-match
conference road swing, beginning at Mars Hill on Friday.
First-serve versus the Lions is set for 7 p.m. at Stanford
Arena.
