BREVARD, N.C. - After a perfect start in the doubles round,
Anderson University women's tennis swept through the singles round
and shut out South Atlantic Conference rival Brevard, 9-0, Tuesday
afternoon at the BC Tennis Complex.
With the victory, the Trojans have won two straight matches and
improve to 8-3 for the season with a 5-2 mark in league play.
Brevard drops to 1-9 overall with a 0-5 record in the
conference.
In the doubles round, freshman Ivey Welborn and Rebecca Bruning
notched an 8-5 victory over Katie Daugherty and Jule Hermann at the
No. 1 position, while Mairead Cleary and Alexandra Ebner defeated
Lisa Pettig and Camille Cameron at the No. 2 slot, 8-2. Rounding
out the doubles portion, the sister team of Abigail Gregory and
Lindsay Gregory posted an 8-1 triumph over Nirvanna Silva and Anita
Maryskova at No. 3.
The wins continued in the singles round, as Welborn recorded
AU's only three-set win of the day by knocking off Daugherty, 6-4,
1-6, 10-6 at the No. 1 positon, while Bruning remained perfect in
conference matches this season with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 over
Hermann. At No. 3, Cleary claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Pettig,
while Ebner cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Silva at No. 4.
In the final singles matches of the afternoon, Lindsay Gregory
recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Cameron at No. 5, while Nikkola
Wichenko claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Maryskova at the No. 6
position.
Anderson returns to action on Thursday when it hits the road to
Newberry. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
