BELMONT, N.C. - With its South Atlantic Conference schedule on
the horizon for Sunday, Anderson University women's tennis blanked
Belmont Abbey, 9-0, in nonconference action Saturday afternoon at
the Reidy Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Trojans jump to 3-0 on the young season,
as the team has yet to drop an individual match this season. With
the setback, the Crusaders dropped their spring season opener.
The Black and Gold opened the contest with three wins in the
doubles round, as sophomore Rebecca Bruning and freshman Ivey
Welborn notched an 8-0 shutout over Katherine Miller and Alex Weber
at the No. 1 slot, while senior Lindsay Gregory and Mairead Cleary
cruised to an 8-1 win over Brigid Donohue and Erika Noblett at No.
2. Junior Alexandra Ebner and freshman Carolina Monteiro earned a
win by forfeit at No. 3.
AU continued its winning ways in the singles round, as Welborn
recorded her first collegiate win over Miller, 6-1, 6-4, at the No.
1 spot. At No. 2, Bruning defeated Weber, 6-0, 6-0, while Cleary
added a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Noblett at No. 3. Ebner tallied a
6-1, 6-1 win over Donohue at the No. 4 position, while Lindsay
Gregory rounded out the singles portion with a 6-2, 6-1 victory
over Philp at No. 5.
The Trojans begin their conference slate on Sunday when they
host Coker at Max Grubbs Memorial Courts. The first serve is set
for 1 p.m.
