ANDERSON, S.C. - Sweeping through the doubles round with three
straights wins, Anderson University women's tennis continued its
momentum into the singles portion and claimed an 8-1 victory over
South Atlantic Conference opponent Mars Hill Saturday afternoon at
Max Grubbs Memorial Courts.
With the victory, the Trojans have won their first three
conference matchups and improve to 6-1 on the season. The Lions,
who was originally scheduled to host the match but inclement
weather forced the move to Memorial Courts, move to 3-4 overall and
0-3 in conference matches.
AU began quickly, as Trojan freshman Ivey Welborn and sophomore
Rebecca Bruning recorded an 8-6 win over Lucy McLaurin and Jasha
Gerrdink at the No. 1 position, while Anderson's Mairead Cleary and
Lindsay Gregory blanked Juliana Fisher and Natalie Hilbig, 8-0, at
No. 2. Rounding out the doubles round, AU's Alexandra Ebner and
Abigail Gregory defeated Jade Henke and Grace Dipenbrock, 8-4, at
the No. 3 slot.
In the singles round, the Black and Gold continued their winning
ways, as Welborn fended off Geerdink, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1, while
Bruning made her afternoon a perfect one with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph
over Fisher at the No. 2 position. At No. 4, Ebner claimed a 6-3,
6-0 win over Henke, while Lindsay Gregory shutout Hilbig, 6-0, 6-0
at No. 5. Abigail Gregory closed the victories with an 8-3 pro-set
win over Dipenbrock at the No. 6 spot.
The Trojans are scheduled to return to the courts on Tuesday
when they welcome Lander to the Electric City. First serve is
scheduled for 3 p.m.
