ANDERSON, S.C. - With junior Jasmine Franklin's double-double,
Anderson University women's basketball captured its 14th straight
victory with a 70-63 triumph over South Atlantic Conference
opponent Coker Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.
With the victory and a loss by Wingate earlier on the day, the
Trojans take sole possession of first place in the current
conference standings, moving to 18-2 in the SAC. Overall, AU
recorded its 21st win of the season and moves two victories shy of
the 2012-13 season win total of 23, when the Trojans won a SAC
regular season and tournament championships.
Franklin tallied 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in the
victory for her second career double-double, while also knocking
down 6-for-12 from the field. Franklin followed teammate Sierra
Simpson with 15 points, as the guard has now scored in double
figures in seven straight games and moves closer to 1,000 points
for her career, needing just 40 points to accomplish the feat.
Senior sharpshooter Lesley Woods rounded out AU's double-figure
scoring on the day with 11 points, including three made 3-pointers.
Sophomore forward Alexis Dillard added eight points and five
rebounds, while junior Jennifer Monroe dropped in eight points and
four boards.
Coker (10-16, 6-14 SAC) was led by Kelley Godbout with a
game-high 17 points on 5-for-7 shooting, while teammates Hailey
Yohn and Tanesha Stenson followed by 15 and 11 points,
respectively. The trio was responsible for just over 68.2 percent
of the team's scoring on the day.
After AU scored the first four points of the game with a lay-in
by Franklin and a jumper from Simpson, the teams traded buckets up
until the 14:26 mark when the home side took another four-point
lead on a Katie Davis lay-in. Anderson would earn its largest lead
of the game of seven when Madison Floyd buried a corner trey,
forcing a Coker timeout.
The Trojans continued to attack when they stretched their lead
to 11 following a pair of Floyd free throws, but the double-digit
lead was short-lived when Godbout drained a 3-pointer to bring the
score to 18-10 with 11:30 remaining.
Anderson continued to control the first half and led by four
with 6:35 left, but Coker's Yohn sunk the visitors' final 3-pointer
of the half and brought the Cobras within one. After a misfire on
the opposite end, two free throws from Yohn would give Coker its
first lead of the contest at 29-28 with just over five minutes
remaining.
Facing its first deficit, AU regained the lead with a jumper
from Monroe, but the Cobras answered with four straight points and
took a 33-30 lead at the 3:42 mark. The teams continued to trade
one-point leads for the final moments of the opening period until
AU held a 36-35 advantage and Floyd chipped in a jumper to set the
halftime score at 38-35. Floyd and Simpson paced the Trojans in the
first half with seven points apiece.
After Anderson held a 43-41 lead through the first four minutes
of the second period, a 3-pointer from Woods began a quick 7-0 run
by the Trojans and gave AU a convincing nine-point lead with 13:50
to play.
The home side saw their lead go as high as 11 after a Franklin
lay-in at the 11:48 mark, but Coker answered the double-figure
deficit with a 7-0 spurt of its own to bring the score within four.
The Cobras continued to chip away at the lead and brought the score
within two following Terrika Foster's only 3-pointer of the game,
making it 59-57.
With Simpson making a jumper on the next possession, Coker's
Kiara Shoats brought the score within two once again, but it the
closest the Cobras would come for the rest of the game. Following
the Shoats basket, Anderson scored five unanswered points, capped
off by Nakia Young's traditional three-point play with just less
than two minutes remaining.
The Trojans closed the afternoon with a perfect 4-for-4
performance from the free throw line in the final minute to cap off
the conference victory. With the win, AU moves to 18-0 when leading
at halftime.
Anderson hits the road for the final time during the regular
season on Wednesday when it heads to Tusculum. Tip-off from
Greeneville, Tenn. is set for 6 p.m.
