ANDERSON, S.C. - After sweeping through the doubles round,
Anderson University women's tennis won five of its six singles
matches and cruised to an 8-1 victory over Catawba in South
Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Max Grubbs
Memorial Courts.
With the victory, the Trojans have won five of its first six
contests this season and improve to a perfect 2-0 mark in
conference play. The win also improves AU's home record to 3-1 on
the year.
In the doubles round, the tandem of Alexander Ebner and Abigail
Gregory stood out with an 8-0 shutout over Catawba's Sloan Kessler
and Rachel Rudisill at the No. 3 position. Following the duo was
Mairead Cleary and Lindsay Gregory with an 8-1 triumph over Laured
Sledd and Maddy Henderson at the No. 2 spot. Rounding out the
doubles round was the No. 1 pair of Ivey Welborn and Rebecca
Bruning, as they knocked off Liz Renteria and Kristen Rocko,
8-3.
The victories continued in the singles portion as Clearly
defeated Kessler, 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 slot, while Ebner tallied a
6-2, 6-3 win over Henderson at No. 4. Abigail Gregory recorded a
three-set win over Rudisill, 6-4, 3-6, 10-2, while Welborn and
Bruning notched pro-set tiebreakers at No. 1 and No. 2,
respectively.
Anderson is slated to return to the courts on Tuesday when it
hosts Lander. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
