ANDERSON, S.C. - In a contest that was delayed more than two
hours due to the official's travel woes, the Anderson volleyball
team opened its final two-match South Atlantic Conference homestand
of the season by falling to Lincoln Memorial, 3-2, (19-25, 25-14,
16-25, 25-16, 9-15) Friday night at the Abney Athletic
Center.
With both teams battling for a berth in the postseason SAC
Tournament, Anderson slipped to 10-15 overall and 8-11 in the
conference with its third straight setback and sixth setback in
seven decisions. Lincoln Memorial (13-12, 10-9 SAC) earned a sweep
of the regular-season series with its fourth win in five
matches.
Sophomore Serena Jackson led the Trojans with 15 kills on a .464
hitting percentage, marking her third straight double-figure kill
tally and 12th double-figure match of the season. She also matched
her season high with five block assists. Sophomore Marissa Mitter
posted her fourth consecutive double-figure kill outing with 13
kills and 12 digs, while junior outside hitter Tinsley Hallman
chipped in 10 kills and six digs.
Junior Priscilla Irizarry notched her 12th double-double of the
campaign and fifth in six matches with 39 assists and 20 digs.
Freshman Emily Conard recorded 17 digs on the night, while Allison
Gaminde equaled her season high with four block assists.
The Lady Railsplitters posted a .290 hitting percentage in the
opening frame and snapped a 14-14 deadlock with four consecutive
points to take a lead they would not relinquish. LMU built its lead
to six, at 22-16, and maintained the margin the rest of the
way.
The Trojans reversed the tables in the second frame, as AU
posted a .294 hitting accuracy en route to building a double-digit
advantage. LMU posted the first point of the set, but Anderson
raced out to an early 7-3 lead and never looked back.
The two teams combined for 11 attack errors in the third set,
with the Lady Railsplitters building a 16-4 cushion that proved too
much for the Trojans to overcome.
AU bounced back in the fourth frame by posting a match-best .359
attacking accuracy, while committing just three miscues in 39
attacks. Jackson led the way with six of her kills in the set,
while recording just one error in 10 attempts. The Trojans opened a
9-2 advantage and LMU would get no closer than four in the final
moments, as AU forced a fifth and deciding set.
The Trojans garnered a 5-2 lead in the final set, but were
unable to hold off Lincoln Memorial, as the visitors rallied behind
a 7-2 surge to take the six-point win.
Anderson will bid farewell to both Hallman and Irizarry when
Carson-Newman invades the Abney Center for the Trojans'
regular-season home finale on Saturday afternoon. First-serve is
scheduled for 2 p.m.
