HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Anderson University volleyball team
opened a three-match road swing with a 3-0 (27-25, 26-24, 25-20)
setback to Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference action
Friday night at Mary Mars Gym.
Anderson (7-6, 5-3 SAC) has suffered two straight setbacks after
having its three-match win streak snapped last weekend, while
Lincoln Memorial (5-6, 3-5) snapped a three-match skid at the hands
of the Trojans.
Sophomore Serena Jackson led the Trojans with nine kills, while
junior Allison Gaminde added eight kills. Sophomore Marissa Mitter
and junior Jessica Harris each tallied seven kills. Junior
Priscilla Irizarry recorded her seventh double-double with 35
assists and 16 digs, with freshman Megan Embry posting a match-high
20 digs. Fellow freshman Emily Conard came up with 15 digs.
The opening frame set the tone for the rest of the match, as
there were 14 ties and six lead changes throughout, with neither
team able to build more than a five-point cushion. The Trojans
staked a late four-point lead, but the Lady Railsplitters held off
set point four consecutive times with five unanswered points to
overtake AU.
LMU bolted to a quick 3-1 edge, but the Trojans rallied to claim
a brief 5-4 advantage. The back-and-forth battle continued the rest
of the way, with AU snapping a 17-17 deadlock with a 7-2 outburst
behind a pair of kills from both Irizarry and freshman Savannah
Bean. With AU holding a 24-21 edge, the Lady Railsplitters
capitalized on three consecutive attack errors by the Trojans to
even the score at 24 apiece. With the score tied again at 25-25,
LMU knocked down a pair of kills to finish the rally.
The Trojans took one of their three leads in the second set when
Harris and Gaminde teamed up for a block that gave AU an early
brief, 3-2, advantage, with Gaminde's kill moments later giving the
Trojans a 4-3 edge. As the two teams battled on even terms, the
Lady Railsplitters broke a 9-9 tie with six unanswered points
before the Black and Gold rallied late to overcome a 20-16 deficit
and claimed a 24-23 lead on an LMU error. But the Lady
Railsplitters countered with three consecutive points to take the
set by a two-point margin.
Anderson led once early in the third set, but the Trojans were
unable to overcome the Lady Railsplitters' .433 hitting percentage
during the frame. LMU grabbed a 15-9 lead behind a 9-3 outburst and
held the advantage the rest of the way. The Trojans climbed back
within 23-20 on Harris' seventh kill of the night, but could get no
closer, with the Lady Railsplitters posting back-to-back kills to
win the contest.
Anderson will get back on the court on Saturday, when the
Trojans visit league co-leader Carson-Newman. First-serve is slated
for 2 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tenn.
