ANDERSON, S.C. - Two second-half goals from freshmen Kenzie Van
Heusen and Megan Foster put the match out of reach, as Anderson
University women's soccer blanked South Atlantic Conference rival
Catawba, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
The victory hands the Trojans (12-2, 6-2 SAC) their first win
over the Lady Indians since the 2012 season, as they avenge a 5-0
setback to Catawba a season ago. Anderson also improves to a
perfect 6-0 inside Trojan Stadium, as it has not dropped a home
contest since Oct. 10, 2014. Catawba continues its streak to eight
straight matches without a point and move to 3-10 on the season
with a 2-6 mark in league play.
To open the match, the visitors started quickly, posting the
first four shots of the half, but never crossing the goal line. For
the half, Catawba out-shot the home side, 10-6, but the match went
into the halftime break scoreless.
"It was a game of two halves," Anderson head coach Ciaran
Traquair said. "The first half we were poor and not set to the
standard that I expect."
The Trojans picked up momentum in the second half, as they found
the scoreboard in the 51st minute when junior attacker Idoia Agirre
was fouled inside the Catawba box. Van Heusen stepped up to the
penalty spot and beat Catawba goalkeeper Bethany Davis to her left
for the freshman's eighth goal of the season, putting AU ahead,
1-0. With the goal, four of Van Heusen's goals this season have
come from the penalty spot.
Moments later in the 59th minute, Van Heusen found room along
the nearside of the Catawba box. The freshman grounded a pass to
the feet of Foster, who was open in front of Davis in goal. Foster
sent a one-timer to the far post and claimed her fourth goal of the
season to hand the Trojans a second-half insurance goal.
The Anderson backline, anchored by senior Faith Johannes and
redshirt sophomore Tera Dolan, recorded its second straight clean
sheet and sixth on the year, as held Catawba to one shot for the
second half. Freshman goalkeeper Abby Helm notched six saves in the
victory, as she moved to 11-2 for the season.
"The second half is probably as flawless a performance as I have
seen since taking over here," Traquair said. "We dominated every
aspect of the game in the second half and were good value for the
win. Kenzie took some criticism at halftime and responded
brilliantly. It's a good day having matched the program's highest
win total in its history."
Van Heusen led the Black and Gold in shots with five, while
Agirre followed with four. Anderson totaled 10 shots on goal with
Van Heusen notching three and Agirre and senior Emily Cowan placing
two on frame.
The Trojans hit the road on Wednesday when they visit Queens for
a SAC matchup. Kick-off from the Queen City is scheduled for 7:30
p.m.
