ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University men's tennis team got
off on the right foot to open the 2015 spring season, as the
Trojans blanked in-state rival Southern Wesleyan, 9-0, Saturday
afternoon at Max Grubbs Memorial Courts.
The victory snapped a four-game setback streak in season openers
for the Black and Gold and marks the first win by the program for
the month of January. The Warriors, who opened their season on
Friday at Newberry, dropped to 0-2.
Two Trojan double teams won their respective matches with an 8-0
shutout, as the No. 2 tandem of newcomer Nicolas Ascarrunz and Paul
Michael Calhoun defeated SWU's Loic Delaby and Matthew Plummer,
while the No. 3 team of Inaki Iriberry and Alex Wallace earned a
victory over Alex Ballenger and Jacob Chesney. The doubles team of
Juan Carracedo and Mateo Rivas, who earned preseason all-conference
honors earlier in the week, tallied an 8-3 win over Camilo Sandoval
and Keegan Barkley at No. 1 to round out the doubles round.
In singles, Anderson continued to attack with five straight set
victories. Rivas defeated Barkley at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1, while
Ascarrunz defeated Delaby 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. Calhoun continued his
winning ways with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Chesney at No. 4 and
Iriberry swept Plummer, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 5 position. At No. 6,
Wallace tallied a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ballenger.
The lone three-set win for the Black and Gold came from the No.
1 spot where Carracedo beat Sandoval, 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 to seal the
9-0 victory for the home side.
Anderson returns to the courts next Saturday when it heads to
Belmont Abbey. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
