ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University men's tennis team got off on the right foot to open the 2015 spring season, as the Trojans blanked in-state rival Southern Wesleyan, 9-0, Saturday afternoon at Max Grubbs Memorial Courts.

The victory snapped a four-game setback streak in season openers for the Black and Gold and marks the first win by the program for the month of January. The Warriors, who opened their season on Friday at Newberry, dropped to 0-2.

Two Trojan double teams won their respective matches with an 8-0 shutout, as the No. 2 tandem of newcomer Nicolas Ascarrunz and Paul Michael Calhoun defeated SWU's Loic Delaby and Matthew Plummer, while the No. 3 team of Inaki Iriberry and Alex Wallace earned a victory over Alex Ballenger and Jacob Chesney. The doubles team of Juan Carracedo and Mateo Rivas, who earned preseason all-conference honors earlier in the week, tallied an 8-3 win over Camilo Sandoval and Keegan Barkley at No. 1 to round out the doubles round.

In singles, Anderson continued to attack with five straight set victories. Rivas defeated Barkley at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1, while Ascarrunz defeated Delaby 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. Calhoun continued his winning ways with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Chesney at No. 4 and Iriberry swept Plummer, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 5 position. At No. 6, Wallace tallied a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ballenger.

The lone three-set win for the Black and Gold came from the No. 1 spot where Carracedo beat Sandoval, 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 to seal the 9-0 victory for the home side.

Anderson returns to the courts next Saturday when it heads to Belmont Abbey. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
