SALISBURY, N.C. - Led by 15 shots and nine coming on goal, No.
14 Catawba blanked Anderson University women's soccer, 5-0, in the
Trojans' South Atlantic Conference opener Saturday evening at E.B.
Frock Field.
Despite claiming two straight victories to begin the 2014
season, AU has suffered back-to-back setbacks evening its overall
record to 2-2 on the season. Catawba, which entered the week ranked
No. 2 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of
America/Continental Tire Southeast Region Poll, improves to a
perfect 4-0 overall mark with a 1-0 tally in the league.
Anderson managed seven shots for the match with five coming in
the final 45 minutes. Newcomers Maddie Volz and Mariana Poveda led
the Trojan attack with two shots apiece, while Poveda tallied one
of AU's two shots on goal. Junior Emily Cowan and sophomore Anna
Masdottir each recorded a shot, while substitute Brooke Forrest
fired AU's final shot on goal.
The Indians entered Saturday's match as the conference's leading
offense with 10 goals on the season, as they have now scored at
least three goals in their first four contests. Freshman Becky
Frost paced the Catawba attack with two second half goals, as she
increased her goal total to six on the year. The home side also
grabbed goals from Mary Kirkman and Alex Hulsey in the first half
and Karen Presnell earned her second goal of the year in the final
stanza.
The 15 shots by the Indians are the most given up by an Anderson
team since Wingate recorded 17 against the Black and Gold in 2013.
Prior to the start of Saturday's match, AU had outshot its
opponents this year, 56-16.
Sophomore Sadie Lancaster closed the evening with three saves,
while the goalkeeping duo of Bethany Davis and Angelica Pawlowski
tallied a save apiece while splitting the shutout for the Indians.
On the season, Lancaster has seven saves.
Anderson jumps back into its nonconference slate on Wednesday
when it travels to Peach Belt Conference opponent Georgia College.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
