ANDERSON, S.C. - Highlighted by four singles victories, Anderson
University women's tennis tallied its seventh South Atlantic
Conference win of the season by knocking off Carson-Newman 6-3
Friday afternoon at Max Grubbs Memorial Courts.
The triumph moves the Trojans above .500 for the year at 8-7 and
7-3 in conference play, while the Eagles drop to 9-13 overall and
2-8 for the league. Anderson snaps a two-match losing streak and
has now won four of its last six matches.
After senior Avery Owens and junior Karen Ching cruised to an
8-0 shutout at the No. 1 doubles spot, the sophomore duo of
Alexandra Ebner and Nikkola Wichenko captured an 8-3 win over
Carson-Newman's Brooke Sanderson and Katie Brown at the No. 3
position. With the back-to-back wins, both of Anderson's tandems
snapped losing skids on the year, headlined by Ebner and Wichenko's
three-match skid.
In the singles round, Owens continued the trend of shutouts with
a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Stefy Stand at the No. 2 position in her
final match at Max Grubbs Memorial Courts, while freshman Rebecca
Bruning got back on the winning track after suffering a setback
against Erskine on Thursday. The freshman earned a 6-0, 6-2 triumph
over C-N's Jennifer Ott at No. 3, as she leads the team in singles
wins with 12 for the year.
Staying perfect for the night, Ebner grabbed a 6-4, 6-2 decision
from Sanderson at the No. 4 spot, while Wichenko defeated Haleigh
Chastain 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.
The Trojans close SAC action on Sunday when it heads to the
Queen City to square off against conference newcomer, Queens. First
serve against the Royals is scheduled for 1 p.m.
