HICKORY, N.C. - After sweeping the doubles round, Anderson
University women's tennis captured four singles matches en route to
a 7-2 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference action
Tuesday afternoon at Hickory High School.
With the victory, the Trojans have won five of their last six
matches and currently ride a two-match winning streak, as they
improved to 6-5 overall and 5-2 in SAC play. Lenoir-Rhyne stumbled
to 8-10 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Senior Avery Owens and junior Karen Ching continued their
doubles winning streak with a 9-7 win over the L-R duo of Zorica
Djuric and Lela Sparks Thompson at the No. 1 position. Owens and
Ching improved to 7-4 for the year as they have won three straight
matches.
At the No. 2 position, junior Lindsay Gregory and freshman
Rebecca Bruning swept L-R's team of Nateesha Hurtt and Meaghan
Liner, 8-0, while the sophomore duo of Alexandra Ebner and Nikkola
Wichenko knocked off Maggie Brown and Lacey Lapp, 8-4, at the No. 3
slot.
In the singles round, AU captured four straight-set wins,
headlined by Owens' seventh victory of the season, cruising to a
6-1, 6-0 triumph over Hurtt at No. 2. At No. 3, Bruning added to
her winning streak, moving the run to seven straight, with a 6-0,
6-3 victory over Thompson.
Gregory grabbed her second straight win with a 6-2, 6-2 win at
No. 5, while Wichenko notched a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 6
position, as she has won seven of her last eight matches.
Anderson returns to the courts on Friday when it hits the road
to Catawba. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
