ANDERSON, S.C. - Earning its second 9-0 shutout of the 2014
season, Anderson University women's tennis blanked Conference
Carolinas opponent Converse Saturday afternoon at Max Grubbs
Memorial Courts.
The win gives the Trojans their second straight victory on the
season after defeating South Atlantic Conference foe Mars Hill 8-1
last weekend. AU moves to 3-4 for the season, while the Valkyries
stumble to 2-7.
The Trojans began quickly, sweeping the doubles round as senior
Avery Owens and junior Karen Ching nabbed a 9-7 win at No. 1
position, while freshman Rebecca Bruning and junior Lindsay Gregory
added a convincing 8-2 victory at No. 2. At the No. 3 spot, the
sophomore duo of Alexandra Ebner and Nikkola Wichenko earned an 8-1
win.
With a 3-0 team lead heading into the singles round, Anderson
kept the momentum as it recorded six straight-set wins. At No. 1,
Ching added a 6-3, 6-4 win, while Owens grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 victory
at the No. 2 spot. Bruning continued her singles success with a
6-0, 6-1 victory, while Ebner defeated Converse's Samantha
Sheffield 6-1, 6-0. Rounding out the singles round, Gregory blanked
Klaire Rouse 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Wichenko crusied to a 6-2, 6-0
win.
Anderson returns to action on Tuesday, March 18 when it travels
to GRU Augusta. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
