ANDERSON, S.C. -With a sweep of the doubles round, Anderson
University women's tennis continued its winning ways in singles,
capturing an 8-1 victory over Mars Hill in South Atlantic
Conference action on Saturday at Max Grubbs Memorial Courts.
The win moves the Trojans to an even 2-2 mark in SAC play this
season, while the Lions fall to 3-4 for the year and 1-2 in the
conference.
Anderson saw little trouble in the doubles round, as senior
Avery Owens and junior Karen Ching earned their third doubles win
of the season with an 8-1 win at the No. 1 position. At No. 2,
junior Lindsay Gregory and freshman Rebecca Bruning claimed an 8-2
win, while the sophomore team of Nikkola Wichenko and Alexandra
Ebner cruised to an 8-2 triumph at the No. 3 spot.
In the singles round, the Trojans captured five of the six
positions, as Owens (No. 2) won her third straight singles match
with a 6-1, 6-1 win over MHU's Anna Rickenbaker. At the No. 3
position, Bruning improved to 4-1 for the year with a 6-4, 6-0
victory over Lucy McLauren.
Ebner won her fourth singles match of the season with a
three-set triumph over Jade Henke at No. 4, while Gregory tallied a
6-2, 6-1 win over Natalie Hilbig at the No. 5 slot.
Wichenko rounded out AU's singles win for the afternoon with a
6-2, 6-1 victory over Dafna Porat, increasing her winning streak to
three matches.
The Trojans continue SAC play on Tuesday when they host Lincoln
Memorial. That match is set for 2 p.m. at the Max Grubbs Memorial
Courts.
